About Flora and our dahlias

Flower Society Flora in Veldhoven is a club for women and men who like to spend time outdoors and have fun with cultivating dahlias. The club consists of ± 21 active amateur dahlia growers. The association was founded in 1954 and is located at Heerseweg 100 Veldhoven.

In season (July through October), there are about 4,000 dahlia plants blooming in different varieties. For €25 a year, you can become a member of the association and grow dahlias in your own "row." The dahlia flowers are grown for personal use.

In addition to taking care of their own plants, members also spend time jointly maintaining the club's flowers and the rest of the garden. During the season, the dahlias are also available once a week for our donors.

If you are unsure about becoming a member, you may be able to help out in the dahlia garden as a prospective member first. The association organizes a number of activities for its members during the season. Each year, Open Days are held, usually in September.

Flora members are also committed to various activities in Veldhoven. For example, they participate in the “Stichting Vakantiewerk” youth days for children from 4 to 12 years old during the Summer holidays and we also provide decorations for numerous events taking place in Veldhoven such as Happy Day (special day for the sick).

Some of Our Dahlias

In 1789, the dahlia was brought to Europe from Mexico. 115 years later, in 1804, the dahlia was really introduced and was named after Andreas Dahl, a botanist from Sweden. At this time, dahlias were found in such places as the botanical gardens of Madrid and later in Berlin. Since then, the dahlia has spread throughout Europe and people started crossing and breeding.

Today's species are all so-called hybrids, summarized under the species name Dahlia Variabilis. The genus dahlia is octaploid, that is, they have eight pairs of genes with hereditary characteristics. This explains the sometimes widely varying results of crosses.

Starting in 1810, cultivation began to develop in the Netherlands. In 1813, grower C. Arentz in Leiden won one of the first stuffed flowers. This grower was one of the pioneers in the Netherlands. By 1819 he was already offering an assortment of some 70 varieties. Since then, many, captivated by the possibilities of this crop, have gained a large number of cultivars in all sorts of variations through crossbreeding.

Another 100 years later, in 1918, the Dutch Dahlia Association was founded, with the goal of promoting the cultivation, trade and export of dahlias. One estimates the number of varieties today at 20,000, but there are probably many more worldwide.

In the extensive colour range in which dahlias occur, only true black and blue are missing. Two-coloured dahlias are also common. Besides the many bright colours, dahlias are also popular for the many shapes they can have.

Sizes range from 2 to 3 cm to true giants of over 30 cm. There are also great differences in height among the many cultivars. The lowest are about 20 cm, the tallest can grow to almost 2 meters high.

The main species are:
